WRITTEN BY PHILLIS is a world-premiere, original play, focused on her remarkable life and poetry.  Her Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, published in 1773 in London, was the second volume of poetry ever published by an American woman and the first ever published by an African-American Slave.   Each line balances Wheatley’s experiences as an African child sold into slavery with her turn to faith, mercy, and salvation. Paul Oakley Stovall and Marilyn Campbell-Lowe reconsider the poet’s seminal role in America's founding and ideals giving Wheatley a chance to be heard in her own words."
